“THE LETTER” (USA)

This video documentary recounts the upheaval in Lewiston, Maine, that resulted when the mayor of the small, economically depressed town published a letter in the newspaper instructing the recent influx of Somali refugees not to bring any more of their kind around. Director Ziad H. Hamzeh fluidly edits a multitude of talking heads – social workers, church leaders, local politicians, neo-Nazis, and citizens black and white – to offer a thoughtful, historically grounded, and utterly absorbing look at a quintessential American experience.
