MOBIUS

by Peter A. Martin

Issues of race are extremely hot button. Ziad H. Hamzeh examines the city of Lewiston, Maine, and how the predominantly white citizenry reacted to an influx of Somalian refugees. Though many were supportive and helpful, others felt that long-time, disadvantaged residents were the victims of discrimination, complaining that the Somalians were received a free ride. When the (white) Mayor wrote an open letter to the local newspaper, asking Somalians to stop moving to Lewiston because they were no longer welcome, the race debate ignited.

Director Hamzeh weaves together many interviews with news footage to present the story of a town divided… It's hard to walk away without being discouraged, disheartened, or angered. To my mind, THE LETTER is a great, thoughtful documentary.
